Educational Goals

Based on Shokei Gakuin’s Founding Spirit, the goal of education in the Graduate School is stipulated in Article 2 of the School Regulations as follows:

With the aim of cultivation of character based on the spirit of Christianity, and in accordance with the provisions of the Basic Act on Education and the School Education Act, Shokei Gakuin University Graduate School will deliver teaching and research of theory and application of advanced and specialized disciplines, to foster fresh education and research abilities and to cultivate people who can contribute to the enhancement of culture and to the welfare of humankind.

The goals for cultivation of professionals of the Graduate School and the individual Master’s Courses are as shown in the table below;

Graduate School To cultivate people with following abilities.
  1. Ability to foster independence, creativity, and a spirit of inquiry to explore and solve problems
  2. Ability to think and act independently for the sake of human welfare as a member of society
  3. Ability to understand and respect different cultures with global perspectives as a citizen of the world
Master's Course in Psychology There are growing expectations being placed on professionals in psychology to possess flexible and sharp perceptiveness and analytical abilities to address mental distress and behavioral problems such as delinquency and bullying. They also need to engage in specialized psychological research related to care from expert perspectives. To meet such expectations, this Master’s Course cultivates well-balanced people with specialized academic backgrounds and the knowledge and skills of adjoining disciplines, as well as people who can reject mere speculation and subjective judgment and instead deliver scientific considerations based on data.
Master's Course in Humanics This Course aims to conduct comprehensive research based on the four years of undergraduate study, to address problems in human coexistence from the perspectives of human culture, society, and history, through basic disciplines related to human existence such as the study of religion, Christian studies, philosophy, and ethics, as well as adjoining disciplines such as sociology, pedagogy, and economics. Through these research efforts, this Course will cultivate people who can underpin and build the kind of society (knowledge-based society) that is becoming increasingly important with new knowledge, information, and technology, as the foundation of activity in all areas of society.
Master's Course in Nutritional Science Given the urgency of the task of cultivating professionals who are able to solve diverse problems related to nutrition and diet with flexible imagination and broad perspectives, the Course will actively accept working people and cultivate people with advanced expertise and skills who can apply the knowledge and experiences that they gain from this Course to their own fields.

Admission Policy

The Graduate School seeks students with the following characteristics:

  1. People who strive for deep consideration, understanding, cooperation, and support of others based on the spirit of Christianity
  2. People who address research projects with strong curiosity and a spirit of inquiry toward their specialized field and who possess a strong sense of purpose
  3. People who will research the various problems related to people’s healthy lifestyles in a scientific manner and strive to put the outcomes of that research into practice

Each Course seeks students with the following characteristics:

Master's Course in Psychology
  1. People who view humankind from the integrated perspectives of “mind” and “body,” and who possess a strong willingness to acquire specialized and practical knowledge and skills
  2. People who will strive to solve various problems and challenges related to human activities and social life through the acquisition of cutting-edge knowledge and research
  3. People who strive to learn the basic knowledge and research methods required of a researcher of psychology, with the aim of becoming researchers in the field
Master's Course in Humanics
  1. People who want to deepen their research into humankind in more advanced and integrated ways
  2. People who want to acquire cross-disciplinary capabilities and skills to address various human-related problems
  3. People who want to acquire a high level of intellectual ability to become leaders in building an inclusive society
  4. People who want to acquire a deep and detailed knowledge of the spirit of Christianity
  5. People who want to further elevate their qualities and abilities as teachers and people who are currently working in the education field and who want to upgrade their learning
Master's Course in Nutritional Science
  1. People who strive to solve health problems in local communities through the acquisition of cutting-edge knowledge and research
  2. People who aim to become working members of society with strong curiosity and a spirit of inquiry and who possess advanced knowledge and skills in the health and nutrition disciplines
  3. People who strive to learn the basic knowledge and research methods required of researchers in the health and nutritional science field, with the aim of becoming researchers in the field

Curriculum Policy

Master's Course in Psychology

The curriculum consists of General Subjects and Specialized Subjects. The latter consists of the two areas of Basic Psychology and Applied/Practical Psychology.

  1. The General Subjects consist of compulsory subjects that aim to equip students with the critical knowledge and skills needed to achieve the educational goals of this Course. Students will also ultimately complete their master’s thesis in these General Subjects.
  2. The Specialized Subjects are divided into two areas. In Basic Psychology, students will learn the basics of psychology, and in Applied/Practical Psychology, they will learn and explore ways to apply that basic psychology in practice. All subjects in both areas are offered as electives, enabling students to structure their studies individually in line with their own interests.
Master's Course in Humanics
  1. Subjects are organized systematically into subject groups that enable students to acquire the broad and deep academic knowledge and research abilities that befit the conferral of a master’s degree.
  2. Compulsory and elective subjects, special lectures, and exercise subjects are appropriately structured in a systematic way as coursework.
  3. Special research is offered to enable students to collect research outcomes and academic information appropriately, accumulate research activities appropriately, and learn the academic way of research reports and presentations, research ethics, etc.
Master's Course in Nutritional Science

The curriculum consists of General Subjects and Specialized Subjects. The latter consists of the two domains of Nutritional Science and Health and Nutritional Design.

Diploma Policy

Students who have achieved the goals of the Master’s Course, passed the defense of their master's thesis, and earned the required credits stipulated in the Graduate School Regulations will be conferred with a master’s degree.

Master's Course in Psychology

Acquire the high degree of knowledge and skills needed to work as a professional in the field of psychology and develop the abilities to solve problems concerning the human mind.

Master's Course in Humanics
  1. Possess a deep knowledge of the spirit of Christianity, advanced and broad education, cross-disciplinary knowledge, and a high standard of ethics.
  2. Possess the ability to explore a wide range of issues related to human coexistence and to create the principles of inclusiveness.
  3. Possess comprehensive literacy (abilities of interpretation, analysis, consideration, judgment, and presentation) for building an inclusive society.
Master's Course in Nutritional Science

Acquire the high degree of knowledge and skills needed to work as a professional in the fields of nutrition and health, and the abilities to solve problems concerning nutrition and health.
