Shokei Gakuin University has the Faculty of Comprehensive Human Sciences consisting of six Departments: Dept. of Culture and Communication Activities, Dept. of Human Psychology, Dept. for the Scientific Study of Children, Dept. for the Study of Contemporary Society, Dept. of Life Environment Studies, and Dept. of Human Health and Nutrition. Shokei Gakuin University also has the Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences.
What is Comprehensive Human Sciences ?
To study the human mind and spirit gives one the power to change the future. We at Shokei Gakuin University believe that most of the problems confronting society today are rooted in the human mind and spirit and that by examining these worlds we will be able to discover clues that will lead us to a deeper understanding of our "problem society". We investigate the human mind /spirit and the human body in order to bring back a vital humanity. Our Faculty of Comprehensive Human Sciences is a place to study how to develop new possibilities for humankind and how to live life to its fullest.
In the Faculty of Comprehensive Human Sciences, the human being is seen as an integration of mind and body. In order to bring back the humanity the present-day society seems to be slowly taking away from us , it is vital that we have healthy minds and bodies. With this in mind, the Faculty of Comprehensive Human Sciences applies scientific methods to uncover those ways human beings might live in our world.
The six Departments are characterized as follows:
Department of Culture and Communication Activities
In the information-oriented society, the multimedia is rapidly growing field and an industry emerging from the synthesis of various communication networks. We will focus three different areas: language communication activities, multi-media communication activities, and regional cultural activities. The aim of the Department is to develop students who want to be producers in the multi-media industry, managers of regional culture centers and media aerators and instructors.
Department of Human Psychology
In the Department, problems of the mind and spirit are comprehensively discussed and examined within the context of social and environmental changes shaking the very foundations of our mental activities. The aim of the
Department is to produce counselors , school teaches, public officials and business workers who have psychological backgrounds.
Department for the Study of Children
In this Department, students study developmental psychology, child health and welfare, theories of childcare and education, and the culture of children and society. On the completion of required credits, students can be certified with the license of Kindergarten Teacher, Certified Childcare Worker, or Elementary School teacher.
Department for the Study of Contemporary Society
The complexity of our contemporary society cannot be explained from only one scope of study. By combining economics, sociology , political science, law, social welfare, information sciences, we will take an interdisciplinary approach toward understanding contemporary society. Focuses will be put on good citizenship, social networks , regional activities and international exchange activities. The aim of the Department is to produce individuals who can "think and act globally as well as locally".
Department of Life Environment Studies
We will take scientific approaches to understanding our human environment and environmental horticulture. In particular, focuses will be put on the ecosystem, living space environments, and the recycling of various materials so as to maintain the ability of our planet to support human life. The aim of the Department is to produce creators and designers of comfortable and eco-friendly lifestyles.
Department of Human Health and Nutrition
We will focus on health, human body and diet since better understanding of one's body, nutrition, and diet is a first step to leading a truly healthy life. The aim of the Department is to produce clinical dietitians as well as certified dietitians who can work in Health and Welfare centers, hospitals, schools and the food industry.
